This Little Row in the Lord's Vineyard
This is the view from the window in the Community Health office at Clínica Esperanza y Caridad. We are close to the Caribbean Sea (see map). The Caribbean Sea is beautiful (except when it sends waves crashing over the retaining wall and into the street toward the Clinic - then it is more exciting than beautiful).
During our placement process in the late 1990's, SAMS considered missionary positions for us in Honduras, in the mountains of Chile, and here in San Pedro de Macorís.
We tend to talk about what we do and represent that viewpoint in our mission communications - the poverty in the neighborhoods in which work, the frustrations, the difficulties, the lack of resources, and the other challenges for us as missionaries here.
However, there is another viewpoint: it really is a "romantic, tropical island paradise" - especially as viewed from one of the all-inclusive resorts nearby (see the resort's slide show).
Whenever the frustrations, the difficulties, and the lack of resources get to us, we can always take a moment and look out the office window.
