Responding to the HIV Epidemic
Episcopax, the Diocesan newspaper here, recently ran a feature article about the staff at the Clinic's HIV/AIDS treament unit citing their work in preventing HIV infection and in caring for those who are infected by HIV. Their work includes clinic-based care, home visits, and provision of social services.
The 'official' HIV infection rate in the Dominican Republic is 1.04%. However, the HIV infection rates in this Province are higher. The rates among young women in this area (Public Health Region V) range from 2.2% to 2.7%, indicating that this area has rates at least twice as high as the national rates.
