FAQ's

A:  We arrived in the Dominican Republic the beginning of May 2000. We have lived here since then, except for ten months that we spent in the USA during the 2003-04 school year.

A: We attended various courses on health ministries, the SAMS pre-field training, a pre-field SPLICE course for families by Mission Training International, and eight months of language school in Costa Rica before we arrived here. (And lots of prayer, by ourselves and others!)

Q: Why are you doing this?
A: We had a call to a long-term cross-cultural mission life. Read more.
Q: What has been your greatest challenge?
A: Beyond the obvious challenges of raising teenage daughters in a cross-cultural setting ...
Anita: Being distant from family and friends (and now even our daughters who are in
college in the USA are distant).
Michael: Maintaining my daily devotions and my relationship with the Lord.

Q: What has been your greatest blessing?
A: Knowing that we are living into the life to the life to which the Lord has called us.

A: Yes. They have been involved since the discernment process in the beginning. It has been difficult and challenging for them at times. Our daughters are all "Third Culture Kids" (TCK's) to varying degrees.
Of all the types of TCK's, Missionary Kids (MK's) typically spend the most time overseas in one country. MK's generally have the most interaction with the local populace and the least interaction with people from their passport country compared to other TCK's. Among all TCK's, the MK's are the most likely to integrate themselves into the local culture. MK's may have a  more difficult time re-integrating into their passport country's culture compared to other TCK's.
A: Our daughters have all attended the Villas de Mar International School. About 80% of the students are Dominicans and the rest are a mix, mostly from Europe and Asia. Rebecca finished in 2003, Tracy graduated in 2005, and Natalia graduated in June 2009. Elizabeth is switching to a home school curriculum in ninth grade and plans to continue home schooling for high school.
